The fonts used in a blog post and a business report don’t necessarily need to be the same. Font variations are useful to change the outlook of your document depending on its purpose. Word processing tools offer a wide collection of fonts, but that might not be the case with Google Docs. You can use a handful of fonts in Google Docs by default. To use different fonts, you need to add them to your Google Docs first.
So… how do you add fonts to your Google Docs? In this guide, we will go over the multiple steps needed to add the font of your choice to Google Docs.
How to Add Fonts to Google Docs in Simple Steps?
In this first method, we will show you how to add fonts from the font toolbar. Follow these steps.
Step 1: Open your document and head to the font toolbar. The font should be Arial by default.
Step 2: Click the drop-down arrow beside the font name. From there, select More fonts. A pop-up window will open.
Step 3: On the pop-up window, you can now select from multiple available fonts. Scroll through the font list and click on your desired font. The selected font will appear under the My fonts tab on the right side of the window.
Step 4: You can narrow this list down by using different filters. Three filters are available on the window. Click on the Scripts drop-down menu and select the desired script.
Step 5: Then, click Show drop-down menu and select the type of fonts you want to add.
Step 6: You can also sort fonts based on their popularity, alphabetical order, adding date, etc.
Step 7: If you want to remove a selected font from the My fonts tab, simply click the cross icon beside the font name. The font you selected will be removed instantly.
Step 8: Finally, click OK to confirm and the added fonts will appear in your document.
You can now use these fonts from the font toolbar.
How to Set Added Fonts as the Default
You might have added your favorite font to Google Docs and need to use that font frequently, but changing the font every time you work on the document can be a hassle. An easier way is to set the font as default so that the font is selected automatically whenever you create a new document. See how you can do it.
Step 1: Open a document and select all text by pressing Ctrl + A.
Step 2: Head to the font toolbar and select the desired font. For example, we selected Cambria for our document.
Step 3: Click the Format menu. Hover the mouse over Paragraph styles and a sub-menu will open. Select Normal Text from the sub-menu and then select Update ‘Normal text’ to match. You can also select different fonts for titles and headings using this method. Remember, the selected font will apply to the current document.
Step 4: To set the font as default, click the Format menu again. Then, go to Paragraph styles and hover the mouse over Options at the bottom. From the sub-menu, select Save as my default styles. It will set the font as default.
Next time you create a document, this font will be automatically selected for normal text.
How to Add Fonts to Google Docs Using Add-Ons
If your collection of Google Fonts doesn’t seem to be enough, you can use even more fonts using add-ons. Let’s show you how to add extensions to Google Docs.
Step 1: Open a document and go to the Extensions menu. Then, click Add-ons from the menu and select Get add-ons from the sub-menu. This will open the Google Workspace Marketplace in a pop-up window.
Step 2: Click on the search box and type Extensis Fonts. Select the add-on from the suggestion. Then, click on the extension.
Step 3: On the next window, click Install to get the add-on in your Google Docs.
Step 4: Then, click CONTINUE to give permission.
Step 5: Select your preferred Google account for the extension and click Allow. The add-on will now be installed on your Google Docs.
Step 6: On the pop-up window, click Next. Then, click Done to finish the installation.
Step 7: Go to the Extensions menu again. Then, select Extensis Fonts and click Start to launch the add-on.
Step 8: Extensis Fonts will appear on the right sidebar. On the top, you have two options to filter fonts.
Step 9: Now, select any text you want and click the preferred font on the right sidebar. The font will be applied to the selected text.
