What is a domain name? For small business owners, it is a question that is avoided out of concern of being scoffed at by the internet’s more tech-savvy crowd. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s a valid and important question – one that most could not answer beyond that it’s important to a website. If it’s important however, wouldn’t we want to better understand what it is?

A domain name is defined as “the part of a network address that identifies it as belonging to a particular domain.” Basically, your domain name is what someone types in the address bar in order to get to your website. For example, Visual Oak is our company name. Visualoak.com is the domain name and what you type into the address bar that will tell your browser to bring up the Visual Oak website. A domain name has a straightforward meaning and a simple purpose, but the importance of it should not be overlooked.

What should my domain name be?

Your domain should be easy enough to avoid confusion but unique enough to pique someone’s interest. You don’t want a potential customer having a hard time getting to your website just because they can’t remember or spell it. Shorter ones are easier to remember but the downside is that a lot of them may already be taken. Sometimes you have to get creative to get one that is available and still fits your business. Almost all domains are derived from your business name. You should always check to see if a quality domain name is available before you choose a name for your business.

Why is it important?

If people can remember your domain name, they can easily find your website and direct other people to your site as well. For most business owners, the number one goal of having a website is to drive more traffic to your business and to educate potential customers about what services your business offers. A memorable domain name is critical in helping achieve these goals. It can be difficult coming up with one but the reward is well worth it in the end.

How to purchase one?

Domain names can be purchased from many different domain providers. They range from different prices depending on the TLD that you choose. A TLD, or Top-Level Domain, is just a reference to the domain extension (.com, .net, .org, etc.).  A quick google search should bring up a list of options for you but Google does sell them also. Visual Oak offers a free one with the purchase of a plan for the life of the account.
